The courts in Arizona have three levels:

  • Limited Jurisdiction Courts,
  • Appellate Courts,
  • Superior Court

Arizona has branches in each of our 15 counties.

Limited Jurisdiction Courts are called Justice Courts and Municipal Courts. The Limited Jurisdiction Courts handle criminal and civil traffic violations, misdemeanor crimes, small claims, civil complaints under a monetary value of $10,000, landlord / tenant evictions, orders of protection, and injunctions against harassment.

St. Johns Justice Court – During the COVID-19 outbreak our office will remain open to the public Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are closed on Fridays. Payments can be made at the court by using the drop-box located out front of the courthouse. ALL VISITORS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A FACE MASK AND WASH THEIR HANDS AT THE WASH STATION PRIOR TO ENTERING THE BUILDING. We are trying to limit the spread of COVID-19. All Court Hearings are scheduled on the Court Calendar.

  • Mondays: Initial Appearances and Arraignments
  • Tuesdays: Small Claims Hearings, Bench Trials, Trial and Order to Show Cause
  • Wednesdays: Law and Legal day for Criminal Hearings

Judge Gunnels is also the Magistrate for the of St. Johns Municipal Court.
