NATURE OF WORK:

 

Under general supervision is responsible for work of considerable difficulty in the enforcement of regulations and laws pertaining to environmental health and sanitation; and performs related work as required.  Oversees, coordinates, and evaluates work of sanitarian aide.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

 

Conducts a wide variety of investigative activities and has the responsibility for making decisions in the field to determine if ordinances, codes, rules, and regulations governing the public health related conditions of eating and drinking establishments, food processing, food distribution, sewage and refuse disposal, hotels, motels, swimming pools, and other public related facilities are being complied with; reviews construction plans and specifications for onsite wastewater treatment facilities and environmental health aspects of proposed establishments normally inspected by sanitarian; investigates complaints related to Smoke-Free Arizona; investigates and resolves complaints of citizens regarding potential or possible public health problems; cites violators of County and State health regulations; advises the public on environmental health problems; recommends environmental control methods; takes water, sewage, food and other samples for analysis; prepares and presents relevant reports; perform food borne illness  investigations; assists in planning and implementing policies and procedures; attend training seminars to maintain job proficiency.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of the basic principals and practices in environmental health; knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations pertaining to sanitation.

           

Ability to establish working relationship with other staff members and the general public.

           

Ability to secure facts, evaluate data and draw valid conclusions; ability to communicate effectively.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or related field; possesses current certification as a Registered Sanitarian by the state of Arizona; two or more years of progressively responsible experience performing environmental health inspections in the areas of food service and business establishments, wastewater and septic systems, swimming pools, lodging accommodations and trailer parks.

 

Required: Associate of Science Degree in Environmental Health or related field with a minimum of 30 semester hours in natural science with a “C” or better. – OR – Five years of employment as a sanitarian aide in either a recognized public health agency or private industry in a position directly related to environmental health and under the supervision of a Registered Sanitarian. – OR – Satisfactory completion of at least five years of full-time military service in the field of environmental health. 

 

Qualified applicant must be able to obtain certification as a Registered Sanitarian by the State of Arizona within six months employment.  Further the applicant must possess competence in basic algebra, basic computer skills, and ability to operate a motor vehicle and have a current Arizona Driver’s License.
