Arizona has the 6th highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States for females aged 15 to 19.

Apache County has the 2nd highest Chlamydia rate in Arizona.
Approximately 27% of females in Arizona will become pregnant before their 20th birthday.
In 2009, 16% of girls 15-17 had a subsequent birth, 33% of girls aged 18-19 had a subsequent birth.

Our Mission is to.....
Promote responsible decision making (emphasis on abstinence) and skill building by providing culturally appropriate school and community based education for youth and parents.

How Do We Do It?
All programs use evidence-based curricula that has been proven to delay sexual activity, improve contraceptive use among sexually active teens, and prevent teen pregnancy as well as reduce dropout.

Curricula and other education materials provided in a school based setting follow Arizona Department of Education (ADE) guidelines regarding sex education and are approved by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).


Programs Offered:

Positive Youth Development and Community Service-Learning Program

  • Wyman Teen Outreach Program (TOP): A national youth development program designed to prevent adolescent problem behaviors by helping adolescents develop a positive self-image, effective life skills, and achievable goals. TOP is a nine-month long program that focuses on engaging youth in a high level of community service learning. the TOP can be implemented as an after-school or school-based program.

Evaluation Outcome:
One of only a few programs proven effective in both preventing teen pregnancy and increasing school success.

  • 60% Lower Rate of School Dropout
  • 33% Lower Rate of Pregnancy
  • 14% Lower Rate of School Suspension
  • 11% Lower Rate of Course Failure

Comprehensive Sexual Health Education

  • Smart Girls Life Skills Training Program: An eight to twelve week program for girls aged 12 to 14. Mission: To educate and empower young women by providing information and skills necessary to develop healthy relationships and make smart decisions throughout life.
  • Wise Guys Male Responsibility Program: A ten to twelve week program designed to prevent adolescent pregnancy by teaching young males self responsibility in the area of sexual development. A flexible 10-12 week program focusing on assisting guys to answer the guest ions: Who am I? Where am I going? and How do I get there?
  • Native Stand Program: A program developed to meet the needs of today's Native youth. Native youth face many of the same challenges as mainstream youth, this program embraces the power of traditional teaching and cultural strengthens that Native youth have within themselves and their communities.

Evaluation Outcome:
Smart Girls Life Skill Training Program - Participants outcomes are.....

  • Increased knowledge of reproductive health (STI, contraception, pregnancy)
  • Increased knowledge of healthy relationships (e.g., dating violence /assault, coercion, sexual assertiveness)
  • Increased empowerment, self-esteem and confidence
  • Increased ability to make healthy decisions
  • Increased parent-youth communication

Wise Guys Program: Male Responsibility Curriculum - Participants are more likely to.....

  • Act responsibly by postponing sexual involvement and making healthy decisions
  • Talk with their parents about sexuality
  • Have healthy sex role attitudes
  • Have a greater knowledge about sexuality issues


Parent Education Program

  • Active Parenting of Teens: A six-session program for parents / guardians utilizing and discussions video education and discussions to enhance the learning environment and help with retention of information. This program is flexible and includes education on dealing with drugs, sexuality, and violence. Other topics: responsibility and discipline, building courage, and winning cooperation.
